The Mission of the Society
-
to aid the poor, the
destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the
imprisoned, the widow, the handicapped, the victims of disasters, to
undertake the burial of the impoverished persons and to offer assistance to
anyone who my need the help of the Church through fund raising efforts; and

to promote the
charitable, benevolent and philanthropic purposes of the Greek Orthodox
Archdiocese of America, through instructional programs, presentations,
lectures, seminars and other educational resources;

to preserve and
perpetuate Orthodox Christian concepts and the Orthodox Christian Family,
and through them, to promote the Greek Orthodox Faith and traditions, in
accordance with its doctrines, canons, discipline, divine worship, usages
and customs;

to promote the
participation in the activities of the Greek Orthodox community, with the
cooperation of the Parish Priest and the Parish Council.
The local chapter was organized on
April 29, 1975. The Ladies Philoptochos Society has been since the first day of
its inception the right hand of Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church. The
ladies countless hours of service and dedication to their cause as well as its
financial help to their church through their bake sales and fundraisers are an
inspiration to all.
In 1993 the society chose
as their patron saint, Saint Sophia. Venerated on September 17th, in
the icon of Saint Sophia, she is shown with her three daughters. The name
Sophia means "wisdom" in Greek; as for her daughters' names, Faith, Hope, and
Love (Charity) they are Pistis, Elpis, and Agape in Greek. It was fitting that
Saint Sophia is the patron saint they chose to name their Philanthropic society.
